Me and Bre Podcast Episode #2: “Do We Have A Song?”

Hey everyone! I’ve got another audio blog for you, trying to keep them under 10 minutes so as to not take up your entire day. As a sad reminder, Bre’s in North Carolina right now getting set up and gearing up for work.  There will be time for pensive reflection later, I’m sure.

But this podcast isn’t a sad one, it’s a happy one, centered around an interesting question I was asked over the holidays. The answer might surprise you (but if you know Bre, it might surprise you a little less).

Spoiler Alert:

If you don’t want to listen to my voice for nine whole minutes (you mean person you), this is our songTry not to judge us.

For those of you who DO want to listen to me talk: Here’s the link to the Podcast.

Five Stats for Detroit Pistons Success in 2013

Numbers can’t lie, but sometimes they tell very strange stories.

For example, the Detroit Pistons began the 2011-12 NBA season 4-20. Those numbers paint the picture of a dismal, lottery-bound team (which is what the Pistons were last year). However, those same Pistons ended the season 21-21, which paints the picture of a team that could compete for a playoff spot in the objectively mediocre East (which is what the Pistons could be this year).

It’s a TV show and an axiom: Number Never Lie.

If the Pistons are going to be the fringe playoff contender they showed flashes of in the second half, some more stats are going to have to fall into place. Here are ten stats that’ll determine how the Pistons fare this year. Read more

Countdown to Adulthood, Day 100: Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems

Over the weekend, my girlfriend got some great news:  She got offered a full-time position doing engineering stuff right after she graduates this December. Because we’re fairly serious about spending our future together, this is good news for me too. But I’m also nervous. This full-time position means moving with my girlfriend to a new state – and being as far away from my immediate family as I’ve ever been. (This also should be a cause for celebration. I’m weird.)

So now I’m writing again.  This post is the beginning of a series of blogs meant to channel my emotions about all the possible ramifications of this giant step on my (our) way to becoming adults.  Read more

Reasonable Comparisons: Andre Drummond

I love thought exercises and player comparisons, so here’s one for you:

Below are the rookie seasons of an NBA champ, two $40-million-dollar big men, an Olypmic Gold Medalist and my projections for Andre Drummond.

Player A: 12ppg/10rpg/1.7bpg/FG %: 52%/ 32mpg

Player B: 6ppg/4.8rpg/1.3bpg/FG %: 50%/20mpg

Player C: 8ppg/4.7rpg/1.4bpg/FG %: 51%/ 21 mpg

Player D: 6ppg/3.9rpg/1bpg/FG %: 50%/15 mpg

Player E: 4.3 ppg/4.5rpg/1.1bpg/FG %: 63% /14.5 mpg

Anibal Sanchez more than a #5 starter for Tigers

I hated the Omar Infante – Anibal Sanchez deal when I first heard about it. I thought prospects Jacob Turner and Rob Brantly were too much – even to fill the singularity the Tigers have at second base – because the bigger issue on the team is starting pitching, and I didn’t think Sanchez was worth it.

I hate the idea of starting pitchers going to the AL from the NL on anecdotal principle (Hiroki Kuroda, Johnathan Sanchez, Ubaldo Jiminez, hell, even Jake Peavy), so you know I wasn’t liking the idea of Anibal Sanchez (AKA “The guy who threw that no-hitter that one time”) filling the fifth spot in the Tigers’ rotation.

Then, because anecdotes aren’t facts,  I looked up Sanchez’s stats.

Free Agency Options for the Pistons

Free agency is an exciting time for a lot of NBA fanbases. Unfortunately, Pistons fans can’t share in the joy.

It’s NBA Christmas… and the Pistons are screwed by the Salary Scrooge.

The untenable cap situation in Detroit means all the Pistons have available to them are the full Mid-Level Exception (basically, they can go over the cap to sign ONE guy, at $5 million a year.) That eliminates my “Free Agent Want list” (which was basically Javale McGee, as sad as that is) and limits the Pistons to signing guys who are willing to play in Detroit (which isn’t excatly a free agent destination) for the midlevel.
